With miles of protected waterfront on Long Island Sound, the City of Rye is one of Westchester's treasures. Only 24 miles from New York City and a quick 34 minute commute into Manhattan, Rye has long appealed to those looking for a touch of New England without sacrificing urban sophistication. Settled in 1660, making it Westchester's oldest permanent community, Rye has numerous historical sites. The bustling shopping area concentrated on Purchase Street is filled with exclusive boutiques, superb restaurants as well as casual neighborhood hangouts. Rye has extraordinary natural resources and has aggressively preserved them for the use of its citizens. Among them is Oakland Beach, a pristine white sand swimming beach. Housing ranges from co-ops to majestic waterfront estates with preponderance of manicured, pre-WWII single family homes with the charm and character associated with the era. www.ryeny.gov

Shopping/Dining

  • Whitby Castle is a historic stone building on the premises of the Rye Golf Club. A frequent site of weddings and other special events, it has fine dining in a glorious setting.
  • Koo's nouveau Japanese cuisine is among the hippest new restaurants in Westchester. Highly rated by both the New York Times and Zagat's, it's upscale and expensive. Another place for those who like innovative Pan Asian cooking is Water Moon, which is stylish and popular and also well-rated, but a notch less pricy than Koo's. Try the noodles and fish at Water Moon's.
  • If you are looking for a casual meal of burgers, great salads and other typical American dishes try the Rye Grill and Bar-especially if you just got off the train and don't feel like cooking or Town Dock, which is family-friendly.
  • Many consider Frankie & Johnnie's Steakhouse as good as the original in New York City. It's expensive, but satisfying and both the upstairs and downstairs are lovely.
  • RK, An American Brasserie, is sister to the Greenwich original and offers New American and French food. The chefs are visible to diners through a glass wall. It's highly rated, innovative and expensive.
  • Aurora is busy with fans for its predominately Northern Italian menu-especially the excellent pasta choices. Ruby's Oyster Bar & Bistro is casual and upscale, but seafood is as good as you'll find anywhere.
  • No discussion of Rye restaurants is complete without mention of La Panetiere, the superb classical French restaurant stashed away in a magnificent Rye mansion. Yes, the price is daunting, but for that special occasion…
  • Boutiques include Plaza Two's for women's shoes, Panache for upscale women's clothes and Rags for popular women's wear.
  • Popular chains now conveniently located in Rye include Foot Locker, Gap Kids and Victoria's Secret.
